The Calabogie Summer Classic delivered exactly what I love about Formula Classic racing: a fast track, a competitive field, and a weekend full of changing conditions and shifting fortunes. With the new pavement, everyone expected quicker times—and new lap records were posted each class!!!
Practice — Saturday Morning We rolled out under perfect weather, and right away the pace was hot. James Morton set the early benchmark with a 2:05.700, but I was happy to put the #77 Subject Motorsports FC90 second overall with a 2:07.588. That lap put me nearly two seconds clear of Michael Cross, who ran a 2:11.733. It was a strong start and confirmed that the car felt hooked up right out of the gate. Qualifying — Saturday Afternoon Qualifying brought a shake‑up when Eric Labrecque arrived and immediately threw down a stunning 1:59.677—the fastest lap of any Formula Classic driver all weekend. Morton followed with a 2:06.959. I secured FC90 pole with a 2:08.236, keeping a solid margin over Cross’s 2:09.295. The session tightened the FC90 field, but I felt confident heading into Race 1. Race 1 — Saturday Late Afternoon Race 1 was all about consistency. Labrecque converted his pace into a dominant win, but I focused on running clean laps and managing traffic. I finished third overall and first in FC90 with a best lap of 2:06.427—my quickest of the weekend. Cross finished about twenty seconds behind, with Mackenzie and McCamus rounding out the FC90 order. A solid start to the weekend. Race 2 — Sunday Midday Sunday brought cooler weather and a few sprinkles, but the racing was the closest of the weekend. Morton and I spent the entire race locked together, and he ultimately took the win by just 1.143 seconds. One of the tightest Formula Classic battles of the season. I topped FC90 again with a 2:07.484, but Cross was right there—only 0.507 seconds behind. The FC90 pack ran nose‑to‑tail for most of the race, making it one of the most intense and enjoyable drives I’ve had this season. Race 3 — Sunday Late Afternoon This is where the weekend took a turn. With rain threatening, I made the call to pack up early—only for the rain never to arrive. That opened the door for Cross, who seized the opportunity and took the FC90 win with a best lap of 2:09.457. Morton won overall again, though at a slower pace than earlier in the weekend. Weekend Summary Despite missing Race 3, it was one of my strongest Formula Classic weekends of the year. I was the fastest FC90 driver overall, winning Races 1 and 2 and setting the class’s quickest lap at 2:06.427. The FC90 racing was tight, respectful, and genuinely fun—especially Race 2, where the top three finished within 1.650 seconds. Labrecque’s pace on Saturday was incredible, while Morton showed consistency and racecraft with both wins on Sunday. Calabogie once again delivered a fantastic event, and the new pavement has transformed the track into an even faster, more rewarding place to race. I’m already looking forward to heading back.
